Ed Morgan is an experienced trial and appellate counsel, and is currently a distinguished member of the University of Toronto, Faculty of Law, where he teaches international law and constitutional law.
Commencing February 2007, Ed joined Rosen and Company as Counsel, with a view to serving the firm's clients while continuing his endeavours as a legal teacher and writer.
Following receipt of his B.A. from Northwestern University, Ed attended the University of Toronto Law School where he received his LL.B. in 1983. After earning his LL.M. degree from Harvard Law School in 1984, Ed served with distinction as a law clerk for one year for Madam Justice Bertha Wilson of the Supreme Court of Canada. In 1986, Ed joined the University of Toronto, Faculty of Law, where he taught and wrote as an associate professor until 1989.
In 1989, Ed entered private practice as a civil and constitutional litigator and partner at Davies, Ward, Phillips & Vineberg in Toronto, where he remained until 1997 when he elected to return to academe at the University of Toronto, Faculty of Law as a tenured professor.
Ed has appeared as counsel at all levels of courts in Canada, including the Supreme Court of Canada. He has also appeared as counsel before the Inter-American Court of Human Rights and the Decolonization Committee of the United Nations. He has also been called upon to testify and provide expert evidence on international law in numerous U.S. Federal and State court cases
Ed is active in the community, working with and representing a number of non-government organizations. His briefs include representation of Canadian Jewish Congress, the Law Society of Upper Canada, the Assembly of First Nations, PEN Canada, the Writers' Union of Canada, the Epilepsy Association of Toronto, NORML Canada, the African Canadian Legal Clinic, and the Canadian Coalition of Liberal Rabbis for Same-Sex Marriage.
Ed has a close and continuing association with Canadian Jewish Congress. From 1998 to 2001, he served as legal counsel. From 2001 to 2004, he served as Chair of CJC Ontario Region. In May 2007, Ed completed his three-year tenure as National President of Canadian Jewish Congress. He continues to provide advice and representation to that organization.
